Volunteer Marshals

As some of you may know, the MGCC Midland Centre organises four principal sporting events during the year – two Trials and two Sprints. The Spring Trial is held at Lintridge Farm, near Ledbury, and the Autumn Trial is held at Burton Dassett Country Park, near Gaydon, Warwicks. Both the Spring Sprint and the Summer Sprint are held at Curborough, near Lichfield.

For all these events, we always need the help of volunteer marshals. Marshalling is not an onerous task (as long as the weather is good!), and many people who volunteer find that they enjoy the event(s) and return in the future.

For those of you who are more local to the event locations, and have people in your groups who might be interested in assisting at any of these events, please ask them to contact the Midland Centre via our central email address – midlandcentre@mgcars.org.uk

Without the help of volunteers, these and other similar events cannot take place, so please give it some thought.

Calendar Of Events 2010

Hopefully, by now all our Midland Centre members should have received a printed copy of our Calendar Of Events for 2010 with the latest edition of 'Safety Fast'. If not, please let us know via our central email address - midlandcentre@mgcars.org.uk - and will will forward one to you. Please note that the printed Calendar is an abbreviated version of that shown on this website, and includes our principal events. Details of other events can be found on the Calendar web page.

We regret to inform you that a couple of errors crept into our printed Calendar Of Events for 2010. On the page entitled ‘Committee and Contacts’, the email address from our Chairman, John Fry, should read – allfrys@yahoo.co.uk - Not 'allfrys@aol.com'

On the same page, the email address for Sprint organiser Dave Ormerod should read – ormerod.david@sky.com - Not 'dave-gay@blueyonder.co.uk'

Please accept our apologies for these errors. If you require confirmation of any other email addresses, please let us know. In case of any other email problems, you can always send your mails to our central address – midlandcentre@mgcars.org.uk – and we will forward them to the correct people.

An Evening with Mike Costin - 17 March 2010

Our friends at the Kilsby MG Group have organised an informal evening with Mike Costin, one half of the twosome responsible for the creation of the famous Cosworth engine brand, the other being Keith Duckworth. This event will be held at Willoughby Cricket Club, The Green, Pye Court, Willoughby, near Rugby CV23 8BZ. The venue is just off the A45, about a couple of miles from the M45.

It will be a ticket 'do', £7.50 per head, which will include a donation to the cricket club, a finger buffet in the interval with the main donation to a charity of Mike's choosing. There is a seating limit of 50, so it would be good to get firm numbers a.s.a.p. If interested, please contact Rick Willoughby on 01327 704232.

'Bridget The Midget' Presentations - April & May 2010

A little advance notice for you - The Midland Centre Committee is currently working on arranging two presentations by Roy Locock, owner and driver of 'Bridget The Midget', which recently completed a round-the-world epic drive. Roy will be recounting his exploits. The intention of having two venues is to allow both sides of our region equal opportunity to attend an event. Precise details have yet to be finalised, but the first presentation is scheduled to take place at Luffield Cars, Loughborough, on the evening of Wednesday, 14 April. The second presentation is scheduled for Somers Sports & Social Club, Halesowen, West Midlands, on the evening of Wednesday, 12 May. There will be a small entry fee, probably in the region of £6 or £7, with proceeds going to Roy's nominated charity, UNICEF. Drive It Day - 25 April 2010

This year's Classic Car 'Drive It Day' is on 25 April. Many MG groups and Natters will be organising runs to places of interest, so please contact your local group or Natter for further information. For those of you who aren't attached to a group or Natter, there are other options; for example, the Midland Automobile Club, owners of the Shelsley Walsh hillclimb, have their MAC Classic run, starting from three locations around the Midlands, finishing with untimed runs up the hill. The event is open to members and non-members. For further information, go to - www.shelsley-walsh.co.uk -  We understand that the Stafford MG Enthusiasts Group are intending to join in with that event.

MGCC 'MG Live' At Silverstone - 4, 5 & 6 June 2010

The dates for this year's 'MG Live' event at Silverstone have now been confirmed as the 4th, 5th & 6th of June. We anticipate that the Midland Centre Committee and associated volunteers will once again be involved with campsite control, and Midland Centre members will be welcome to visit us on-site. Our marquee is usually sited at the entrance to the main campsite, and it is hoped that we will once again have a presentation table in the Centres/Registers/Branches marquee, as we have for the past couple of years. We will look forward to seeing you there.

Midland Centre 'Midsummer Gathering' - 9 June 2010

A little earlier than usual this year, our annual 'Midsummer Gathering' has been pencilled in for the evening of Wednesday, 9th June. This is because our regular hosts, The Whittington Inn, on the A449 at Kinver, near Stourbridge, are holding various events to celebrate the pub's 700th anniversary. A potted history informs us, "The pub, once the home of Sir William de Whittington, grandfather of legendary Lord Mayor of London Dick Whittington, is about to mark its 700th birthday. It is also said that King Charles II took refuge in the building following the Battle of Worcester. Queen Anne also spent a night there in 1711, and the solid oak front door holds one of only two her Royal seals in the country. The house became the Whittington Inn in 1788 when Lord Stamford transferred the licence – and the pub sign – from a smaller building a few hundred yards away." So now you know! Here's hoping for a nice balmy evening, and we will hope to see some of you there.

Midland Centre Regalia

Do you need a new cap to protect your delicate head when driving with the top down? Are you looking for a new polo shirt to show off those tanned arms so redolent of being an MG owner? Well, you could do worse than check out our range of Midland Centre regalia (now referred to as 'merchandise' in some quarters), much of which can have emblems and logos customised to suit your own requirements. As well as the traditional caps and shirts, we can also supply other items, such as fleeces, amongst a large range of clothing, all at very reasonable prices. For further information, please give Paul Hipkiss a call on 0121 550 4280.

Midland Centre DVD - Welsh Rallies 1951 to 1954

The Midland Centre Committee still has some DVDs available showing never-before published film of some of our very first Welsh Rallies held from 1951 to 1954, much of it in colour. We hope that Midland Centre members will take this opportunity to purchase a piece of MG Car Club history, and possibly see their own cars in action nearly 60 years ago! As a value-added bonus, the DVD is introduced by MGCC President Bill Wallis, himself a Midland Centre member and former Committee member, and Bill also provides commentary throughout the DVD. Running time is approx. 105 minutes.

Our price for the DVD is as follow:

UK  -  £11.50

For destinations outside of the UK, please contact our main email address below for further price information.

All prices will include package and postage.

We have a limited number of DVDs for sale, and we have already sold over 100 since its launch at 'MG Live' at Silverstone last weekend, to countries as diverse as Poland, Holland and Argentina.
